Ways of metering

Incident light is the light falling on the subject and hence the incident light metering is to measure the light falling on the subject. Since the light is measured before it falls on the subject the reading is not influenced by the subject tone in any manner. depending on the situation, the incident light meter is pointed towards the light source or the camera from the subject position.

Reflected light is the light reflected from the subject and is measured from the camera position or if closer to the subject, from the camera direction. Since it is reflected from the subject, the reading is influenced by the subject characteristics. More light is reflected if the subject is white and less if the subject is black
