Another example of slow synchronization of flash. The model was requested to stay as still as possible even after the burst of flash. Unless you explain a common man would not know that the film is being exposed even after the flash burst is over. The slow shutter speed has recorded the dancers in the background as blur. The image was composed in a way so as to get the bulb light over the edge of the frame. This has recorded it as a star, further adding to the effect. The areas close to the camera have more neutral light compared to the distant background, because of the fall off in the flash light. Camera is on tripod.

The sky was beautiful as we set up to take this evenning shot of Aparna for her portfolio. aperture and shutter speed was set up so as to get the sky right. One has a lot of control with studio lights as the power can be adjusted through controls on the unit or by simply shifting the units closer or farther to achieve the desired aperture. The flash, external or mains powered, both synchronize at a shutter speed of 1/60th sec , 1/125th sec. 1/200th sec (depending on the camera model) or all lower shutter speeds. To begin with choose an exposure which is right for the sky ignoring the model. Now bring in the artititial light with the intensity which lets you set the same aperture as for the sky. Ofcourse you can fine tune your exposure settings to get a deeper sky or a brighter subject. Further changing the shutter speed will affect the ambient light and not the flash. For longer exposure you may choose to keep the modelling lamp off.

The model was asked to move her hand while the long exposure was made along with the studio light. Notice the ghost image along the waist of the model due to slight body movement. These type of shots come out best at twilight, a little delay can kill the saturation in the blue sky and it would appear black. Further the deep blue sky has added contrast with the red.

In this case as the boatsman is moving, due to slow synchronization the ghost image is formed. he was registered on the sensor due to the flash but since the exposure was still on, as he moved back a sillhoette was registered as well.
